Living on the Edge--a Cottage Almanac

This is a series of almanac commentaries, which would now be called a blog I guess, to let you know what is happening at the edge where human existence intersects with the natural watershed in Salt Creek Canyon. Tune in regularly to the website and hear the latest news from Cort Cottage and company, or better still, come to experience and enjoy it in person.

Dateline: Thursday, March 13, 2008, Elsah reporting in for this week

Time is full for me right now, two weeks until the Three Rivers Artists' Biennial STUDIO TOUR 8, which I organize every other year. Yet, I feel compelled to put a short note in here to tell the wildflowers are here! There are orange hills all surrounding the lake, and close to home the California lilac is intoxicating the air with its scent. If you have not seen Spring here, you have not seen Spring.

No more time to write, visit this STUDIO TOUR LINK, to see what I have been doing.

all for now..................................................................

Dateline: Sunday, January 20, 2008, Elsah reporting in for this week

The days are short, crisp and sunny in the foothills. We are waiting for more snow in the high mountains at any moment tonight and tomorrow with the latest storm on its way. This is the best time to visit Three Rivers, as I say almost every year at this time when I am writing in the almanac, and again, it is the time of the least visitors. I always feel sad about this while I savor this place in the quiet here and now.

But I have been busy.......the new hot tub arrived and I am rebuilding the privatizing fence around it. There is a new platform bed in the bedroom with a queen mattress and mattress topper. A ductless air conditioning system is almost installed in the living room and will be great in the summer months. When all is said and done with these additions I will finally make new photographs for the website.

The wild turkeys continue to make pilgrimage in the meadow below the cottage in the late afternoons, on their way to roost high in the sycamore trees near the creek. There are about thirty of them, and I am always amazed to see those large birds flying to their sleepytime branches. They always seem to have a lot to say to each other.

A computer hard drive death last week interrupted my preparation for the Three Rivers Artists' Studio Tour coming on March 29-30, 2008, www.threeriversartstudiotour.com. This will be the eighth studio tour I have organized. I am now working on a new computer which required updated software and a printer that could read indesign files for printing. It seems to me that computers are morphing too fast for even them to keep up with their own tiny electronic innards. Alas, however, I am still on dial up for the internet, as there seems to be no hope that the monopoly phone company will ever send infrastructure up Skyline Drive for a DSL communication.

We speed up only to be reminded that we always need to slow down.
